The world is currently experiencing a terrible global crisis – we are all very aware of that. In desperate times, people are making masks to protect their families and their own selves. Here we give you a word of caution when you are selecting a filter for your homemade mask. Don’t use fiberglass filters.
Types of Filter Media
You can make a mask out of pretty much anything. People are using everything from laboratory grade respirators to old t-shirts.
In our experience as a vacuum manufacturer, we make and distribute many types of vacuum filters, including HEPA filters, micro pre-filters, wet filters, dry filters, and filter supports. We make mask inserts out of polyester and polypropylene bags which are fiberglass free. While you can use a variety of different filters, you should make sure that the material you are using is lung friendly.
How Fiberglass Affects the Body
Imagine this – you obtain some material for your mask. It includes fiberglass, either inside or outside the filter. In order to get it to fit properly, you trim it with scissors and put it in your mask.
When you trimmed it, or when the company who gave it to you trimmed it, they released dangerous fibers.
Dust is produced when fiberglass is trimmed, chopped, cut, sanded or sawed. Exposure to the fibers present in the dust can occur by skin contact, by breathing the dust or by swallowing the fibers.– Illinois Department of Public Health
Exposure to these small fibers can:
- Get debris in your eyes
- Irritate your nasal passages and upper respiratory tract
- Cause stomach issues
- Make asthma and bronchitis worse
Finding A Quality Mask Media to Use
Our goal is not to cause any more panic – we just want you to have good lung health in a time when COVID-19 targets the respiratory system.
So how do you know if the vacuum filter you picked up is safe to use?
- Contact the manufacturer. They will have data to show the composition of the filter.
- Stay away from fiberglass.
- Stick to materials you know are safe to use, such as cotton.
- Give us a call at (435) 637-5885 if you have questions.
